The 2.0–3.0 mm 5052 aluminum sheet is one of the most widely specified marine-grade alloys globally for medium-to-large chemical storage tanks, process vessels, mixing tanks, IBC totes, dosing tanks and containment sumps where higher mechanical strength and superior corrosion resistance are required compared to pure aluminum (1050/1100/3003).
Compared to 5083 (stronger but heavier & more expensive) or 3003/3105 (cheaper but lower corrosion & strength performance), 5052 delivers the optimal balance for most chemical & process tank applications:
Mg content 2.2–2.8% → best corrosion resistance among weldable, anodizable 5xxx alloys
High strength-to-weight ratio → rigid tank shells & dished ends with thinner gauges
Excellent weldability (TIG/MIG) & formability for dished heads & nozzles
Proven performance in organic acids, alcohols, solvents, purified water & mild alkalis
Surface options:Mill finish — clean, bright for food/pharma direct contact or post-weld passivation,Optional coating — food-grade epoxy or chemical-resistant polyurethane (extra protection in aggressive media)

| Advantage | Detailed description |
|
Best-in-Class Corrosion Resistance |
≥5000–6000 h neutral + acetic salt spray; excellent in pH 2–12 media. |
|
High Mechanical Strength |
Tensile 195–260 MPa → better pressure/vacuum & impact resistance than 3003. |
|
Outstanding Weldability |
o hot cracking; can use 5356/4043 filler or autogenous TIG. |
|
Excellent Formability & Deep-Drawing |
Elongation >12–18% → perfect for torispherical & elliptical heads. |
|
Significant Weight & Cost Savings |
2.5 mm ≈ 6.75 kg/m² vs 4 mm 316L SS ≈ 32 kg/m² → ~79% lighter. |

1: Why choose 5052 over 3003/3105 or 5083 for chemical tanks?
A: 5052 offers significantly better corrosion resistance than 3003/3105 (especially to organic acids & chlorides) while being easier to form & weld and 15–30% cheaper than 5083. It is the sweet spot for most non-extreme chemical & pharma tanks.
Q2: What chemicals / pH ranges is 5052 suitable for?
A: Excellent in pH 4–9 (neutral to mildly acidic/alkaline); good performance with alcohols, glycols, edible oils, purified water, dilute acids (acetic, citric, phosphoric). Not recommended for strong acids (HCl, H2SO4 >10%) or strong alkalis (>pH 12). Detailed chemical compatibility chart available.
Q3: Can 5052 tanks be welded without filler metal?
A: Yes — autogenous TIG welding is possible with good results. For thicker plates or higher strength joints we recommend 5356 or 4043 filler. Weld procedure & qualification support provided.
Q4: Minimum order quantity & lead time?
A: MOQ 3–5 tons (depending on thickness/width); standard mill finish 15–25 days; coated versions 25–35 days. Sample plates free with freight collect.
Q5: How does 5052 perform in high-humidity / coastal chemical plants?
A: Excellent — anodized or coated 5052 passes 5000–6000 h salt-spray. No pitting in 90%+ humidity or coastal exposure. Humidity chamber & coastal exposure data available.
Q6: Is 5052 suitable for food/pharma contact after surface treatment?
A: Yes — mill finish 5052 meets FDA 21 CFR 176.170 & EU 10/2011 after proper passivation. We provide passivation procedure & leachability test reports.
