The 1.0–3.0 mm 5083 aluminum plate (mill finish or anti-corrosion primed) is the global marine industry benchmark for hull plating, superstructure, decking, bulkheads, superstructures, deck houses and other above-waterline structural components in high-performance vessels.
With Mg content 4.0–4.9%, 5083 is classified as the highest-strength non-heat-treatable marine alloy (H116/H321 temper) and offers:
Outstanding resistance to seawater & marine atmosphere corrosion
High fatigue strength & toughness for dynamic sea loads
Excellent weldability without post-weld heat treatment
Significant weight saving compared to steel (≈2.7 g/cm³ vs 7.8 g/cm³)
Surface options
Mill finish:clean, as-rolled for welding & painting
Anti-corrosion primed:epoxy-based shop primer (20–40 μm) for immediate protection during fabrication

Q1: Why choose 5083 over 5086 or 5454 for ship hull & superstructure?
A: 5083 is the industry standard marine alloy with the best combination of strength, corrosion resistance & weldability. 5086 is slightly stronger but more expensive & less formable; 5454 has lower strength. 5083 H116/H321 is certified by all major classification societies and widely proven in service.
Q2: What is the typical corrosion performance of 5083 in seawater?
A: Exceptional – no pitting or exfoliation corrosion in seawater after long-term exposure. Passes 5000+ h acetic acid salt spray (ASTM G85) and real seawater immersion tests. Anti-corrosion primed versions add extra protection during construction.
Q3: Can 5083 be welded without post-weld heat treatment?
A: Yes – 5083 is designed for welding without PWHT. Uses 5356 or 5183 filler for matching strength. High fatigue resistance in welded joints. We provide qualified welding procedures (WPS/PQR) per DNV/BV/ABS standards.
Q4: Minimum order quantity & lead time for certified plates?
A: MOQ 3–5 tons (depending on thickness/width); standard certified plates 20–35 days; custom width or priming 35–45 days. Mill test certificates (DNV/BV) with every shipment.
Q5: How does 5083 perform in low-temperature / polar marine environments?
A: Outstanding – no ductile-to-brittle transition down to –196 °C. Excellent toughness & impact resistance in Arctic & Antarctic service. Low-temperature impact test data available.
Q6: Is 5083 suitable for above-waterline superstructure only or full hull?
A: Both – 5083 H116/H321 is approved for full hull plating (below & above waterline) in high-speed vessels, workboats & ferries. For very thick hull plating (>30 mm) 5083/5086/5456 grades are used; 1.0–3.0 mm is optimal for superstructure, decking & lighter hull sections.
